Summer Travels!

It's that time of year again when we're all starting to think about our summer holidays and, given the unpredictability of the great British summer, it's no wonder that we have thoughts of more exotic foreign climes!! If you've already booked your trip, or if you're simply looking for some inspiration, why not pop into the Owen library and take a look at our extensive range of travel guides? Whether you're going for a relaxing beach holiday, a road trip across America, or backpacking your way around Europe we've got all the information you'll need to make your trip a success! Try searching our library catalogue now.

Maybe you'd like to tell us where you're off to on your hols this year...or if you have a fantasy holiday destination you've always dreamed of visiting? Share your favourite/funniest holiday memories with us, we'd love to hear them!

Oh, and in case you were wondering...my favourite holiday destination is Italy (hence the photo of me in Venice!), my dream holiday would be a trip to the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights...but this year I'm off to Croatia for a week in September!

  1. We visited Las Vegas at Easter, before the trip I borrowed "The Rough Guide to California" from SMU Library, it gave us lots of information and interesting facts.
Vegas is an amazing place to go, bright lights, glitz and glamour, then go on a road trip to see all the surrounding natural beauty.
Death Valley was spectacular and very hot even in April!

I'm off to Canada later on in the summer to see relatives who live in the province of Saskatchewan, can't wait! Have borrowed Lonely Planet's guide to Canada as a taster! Hoping the weather over there will be nice and warm...

  3. After several years of nagging I finally persuaded my wife to try a boating holiday this year.
In April we rented a three bedroom 44ft power cruiser and spent a week on the Norfolk Broads travelling from Stalham to Great Yarmouth, back up through Thurne, Horning to Wroxham and round again to Wayford, stopping wherever it pleased us to along the way. We were blessed with sunny days and had the top off the boat the whole week. It was the most relaxing holiday we ever had.

I love travelling! I love Italy too and went on a city break to Rome at the beginning of May. It is such a lovely city to explore with plenty to see and do. We shared the experience with 2 million other visitors who had travelled for the beatification of John Paul ii!
I know I will be going back, I threw a coin in the Trevi fountain!
In August I am off to Thassos, which is an island off the Greek mainland port of Kavala. It will be a lovely relaxing holiday and for the first time in 22 years we will not have any children tagging along!

  5. We're braving the wilds of Scotland this year - youngest son is convinced we are going to be the first to catch Nessie on film! My best holiday was to Norway. We took a sea plane flight up a fjord and up over the top of a glacier - magical ...

  6. I agree with Caroline. Las Vegas is my ideal holiday destination too as it has so much variety. I think Caroline stayed at the 'Stratosphere'? It's a bizarre destination as the main attractions are the hotels themselves - I've stayed at the Venetian on a few occasions. I am hoping to visit again at the end of the year. Celine Dione is back at Caesar's Palace for another 3 years so that's another reason to visit.

Not been to Death Valley but Red Rock Canyon is stunning.

  7. I agree with everyone's comments regarding Las Vegas but I visited several years ago so perhaps it is time for a re-visit.

This year we took a month’s tour of Australia with a stop-over in Singapore which I can highly recommend. We visited both the West (Perth) and the East coast including Cairns (Great Barrier Reef), Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne.

I particularly wanted to visit the Red Centre, not only to see Uluru but also to visit Alice Springs after reading "a Town Like Alice" by Nevil Shute when I was younger. Unfortunately, it did not quite live up to expectations but I enjoyed ballooning over the outback and the amazing scenery. Along with the Flying Doctor centre we visited the "School of the Air" where we Tourists were encouraged to sponsor library books for the children to use in that vast country and where the coming of the internet has changed their way of being educated enormously!
