We love databases!

Carrying on with this series, today we’re taking a look at ‘Bridgeman Education’, a fantastic image resource for UWTSD students and staff alike.

If you are looking for high quality, copyright-cleared (for educational use) images then take a look at our Bridgeman Education database!  It can be accessed both on and off campus, via the library webpages www.uwtsd.ac.uk/library From there click ‘Online Library’, then select ‘Swansea Online Library’ and finally click the button ‘Databases A-Z’.  You’ll see Bridgeman Education hyperlinked in the list.

The database provides access to over 800,000 images, and offers an advanced search function as well as the option to zoom in close, and you can create a slide-show too!

Examples of subjects represented within the database are art and design, photography, fashion, architecture and art history. Over 30,000 artists are included plus 17,000 photographs and 28,000 portraits, as well as lots of other content.

International Arts Education Week

You'll find loads of art books and journals downstairs
 in Griffith Library!

The third annual UNESCO International Arts Education Week runs from the 19^th to the 23^rd May this year, so it’s nearly upon us. UWTSD Swansea has a rich heritage of arts education, so we’re sure it’s a topic close to your hearts! This year, the theme is Arts for Peace, which builds on the vision laid out in the UNESCO document Seoul Agenda: Goals forthe Development of Arts Education.

Griffith Library at Dynevor is, as you’d expect, the place to go for art books, journals and dvds, but Townhill Library has recently had some new books in about education and the arts too. So, if you’re looking for a book to help you Understand Art History or one on Inspiring Writing in Art and Design, you know where to come!

We’ve also got tons of resources online, so if you want e-books or e-journals, take a look at our catalogue. We’ve also got a whole host of databases to help you find images, journal articles and other information.

Phew! With all that, it looks as though we are definitely ready for International Arts in Education Week!

A warm welcome to our new Art & Design Foundation students!

We'd like to extend a warm welcome to all our new Foundation Art students who began their university studies this week!
 

Your library induction session will take place next week, where you will be introduced to the resources and services that your library has to help you with your course.

In the meantime, if you are on the Dynevor campus please feel free to come and take a look around the Griffith Library - you'll find us next to main reception (see photo of library entrance above!)

We love... the Bridgeman Education database for beautiful images

Bridgeman Education is the digital image database for the Bridgeman Art Library. It gives you access to thousands of pictures for free! Our subscription allows you to search and download these images to use for educational purposes (please don’t use them for commercial reasons or you’ll get us all in trouble!). So, if you’re looking for examples of Paul Cezanne’s work, or would just like to find a picture of a Yorkshire Terrier (well, why not?), Bridgeman Education is the place to go! All images are of the highest quality, so much so that you can even zoom in to admire the brush work on the paintings.

You can access Bridgeman Education on or off campus from the library website’s database pages. If you need any help accessing this or any of our other resources, please ask your friendly librarian. We’re happy to help!

Change to 'Art Full Text' database

If you use our 'Art Full Text' database, you will now see a change to how it looks! The resource has been taken over by EBSCO Publishing, and is now running from their platform.

On a practical note, SMU staff and students can still access the database both on and off-campus via the 'Art Full Text' link on the library webpages. Plus you still have access to the same breadth of Art & Design e-journals as before.

However, if you do need help navigating your way around the new screens, please don't hesitate to contact myself or one of the other SMU Librarians for assistance!

A National Museum of Art for Wales

Wales now has its own National Museum of Art, housed in the existing National Museum, Cardiff!

It has been open for a week, and comprises a single series of integrated galleries containing a mixture of fine and applied art, both historical and contemporary. The opening display includes work by artists Josef Herman, David Hockney and Rachel Whiteread, amongst others.

Yale Center for British Art

We now have a link to the new website of the Yale Center for British Art, via the Art & Design websites link from our library webpages www.smu.ac.uk/library.

The Yale Center for British Art is a public art museum and research institute for the study of British art and culture, and houses the largest collection of British art outside the UK!

From the site, you can search across the Center's entire collection of paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, rare books and manuscripts. You are then able to download high-resolution images of objects in the public domain with no restrictions, free of charge.

So take a look, and let us know what you think!

Google Art Project

For all you art enthusiasts, we now have a link to the 'Google Art Project' website via our library webpages www.smu.ac.uk/library (from there click on the Art & Design subject link, and then 'websites', where you will see it listed).

'Explore museums from around the world, discover and view hundreds of artworks at incredible zoom levels, and even create and share your own collection of masterpieces' ...Google Art Project.

Drop-in session on library e-resources for Art & Design students (and staff!)

All Art & Design students and staff are welcome to attend a drop-in session at 2.00pm on Friday 12th November in Lecture Theatre 2 on the Dynevor Campus. We will be looking at our electronic library resources for Art & Design– how to access ebooks, e-journal articles, images, newspaper articles and more. The session will be informal, and suitable either as a refresher session or if you haven’t previously attended something similar!

Database of the day - Art Full Text

For all you SMU Art & Design students (and staff!), Art Full Text is an excellent resource for journal articles, offering access to over 600 electronic titles. Featuring full-text articles, abstracting and indexing of an international array of peer-selected publications, podcasts, and page images, Art Full Text is an unmatched resource for art information.

The database covers fine, decorative, and commercial art as well as photography, folk art, film, architecture, and much more. In recent years, coverage of Latin American, Canadian, Asian, and non-Western art has expanded greatly, along with its material on new artists, contemporary art, exhibition reviews, and feminist criticism.

You can access Art Full Text both on and off-campus too, via the library webpages www.smu.ac.uk/library. Click on the Art & Design subject area link followed by the Databases link - you'll see it at the top of the list!
