In Memoriam...

To mark Remembrance Day this coming Sunday, our University Records and Archives officer has once again put together a small display to commemorate the bravery of our students who gave their lives for their country during the first and second World Wars. It is on view in the Owen Library, Mount Pleasant Campus until November 21st if you would like to come and take a look. We also have Royal British Legion Poppies for sale at the ground floor main desk.

If you are feeling particularly inspired by this why not borrow something topical from our vast library collection...some war poetry maybe? We have The Poetical Works of Rupert Brooke at Townhill Library (shelfmark 821.912/BRO), which includes this classic poem:

The Soldier

If I should die, think only this of me;
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

Remembrance Day Display

To mark Remembrance Sunday this weekend, our SMU Records and Archives Officer, Gill Fildes, has put together a small display in honour of some of our past students who gave their lives for their country whilst undertaking military service during World War One. The exhibit is on view in the glass display cabinet at the Owen Library, Mount Pleasant Campus, until Monday 15th November. We also have Royal British Legion poppies on sale at the main issue desk for those wishing to show their support.
